EA has announced that it is remaking Syndicate, the classic strategy game which Bullfrog produced way back in the early nineties.
Well, with all the film reboots going on, it’s no surprise that game publishers are also thinking about resurrecting hit franchises.
The new version will be developed by Starbreeze Studios, responsible for The Chronicles of Riddick game, but this time around it won’t be an isometric strategy game. Far from it.
Starbreeze is promising a brutal first-person shooter, but it will also have adventure and hacking elements along with a fully realised story. Think Deus Ex and you’re probably not far off.
Indeed, the project has been underway for some time now, as Mikael Nermark, CEO of Starbreeze, commented: “We are excited to finally reveal what we’ve been working on the past couple years. It’s been a great experience working with EA, and an amazing opportunity for us to use our expertise in the first person shooter and action genres to bring back, and reignite, the signature action/espionage gameplay of Syndicate.”
The game is set in the year 2069 and as with the original, features a shady world which is dominated by a number of different “syndicates” or mega-corporations.
Much as it is now, but without the charade of any governments getting in the way and pretending that they actually hold power.
In the new game Cayman Global, Aspari and Eurocorp are at the front of the pecking order when it comes to America, and you play a cyborg agent of the latter.
At your disposal are a range of conventional weapons, but also bio-tech implants which can be used to slow down time and perform other neat tricks. Such as opening a carton of long-life milk and pouring the first bit without spilling any.
Many of the weapons and settings will be drawn from the original game, which should give veteran fans of the series some heady nostalgic moments. A four player co-op mode is also promised with missions taken from the 1993 version of Syndicate.
This has to be one to watch, and Syndicate should be out at some point next year.
