There has been considerable concern about The Walking Dead lately, as we’ve written about in a few recent stories.
The excellent zombie apocalypse show is shambling back onto our screens this autumn, albeit for only half a series at first, with the rest to come early next year.
And concerns have revolved around potential budget pitfalls – which may be the reason that season two has been split in half like a zombie’s head – but also over the departure of showrunner Frank Darabont.
His place at the helm has been taken by his number two, Glen Mazzara, of Crash fame, but hardly the same pedigree as Darabont.
And Mazzara obviously hasn’t been deaf to the concerns of the show’s fans, now moving to address them.
He basically said that the programme was his priority, not what people thought of him, and also that he wouldn’t attempt to emulate Frank – as that would be an effort doomed to failure.
According to Zap2it.com, Mazzara said: “Really we’re just trying to get it done. I think this is consistent with what we did last year. Like any second season, you try to work out the bugs, you try to improve what you can do and what you’re seeing is the usual growth of any TV show creatively.”
“So there’s no plan to deviate from what we worked out. There’s no different vision of the show. It’s just really like ‘Let’s make the greatest show that we can.’ The show came roaring out of the gate and we just want to continue like that.”
However, he did also note that: “At some point there’s going to be material that’s going to be different.”
By all accounts, much of season two was already in place before Darabont did his vanishing act, anyway. So it might not be until later in the second, or even the third season that we really see Mazzara’s influence on the show.
The Walking Dead is set to resume with season two come mid-October.
