3D is trying to firmly ensconce itself in our lives, on way or another. First we had the return of three dimensions at the cinema (where it had previously failed, several times, the last of which was in the eighties).
Then we had the revelation of 3D in the living room with new 3DTV sets, and 3D gaming on PCs, PlayStations and of course dedicated handhelds such as Nintendo’s 3DS.
While we’re not a huge fan of 3D on the TV screen, we accept that certain people are, and the incumbent Doctor is apparently one of them.
In fact, Matt Smith has expressed his desire to see the 50th anniversary episode – due to be screened in 2013 – to be shot in 3D if possible.
Speaking to Bang Showbiz, he said: “I love making Doctor Who and I get to be part of that 50th year which they’ll do something mental for.”
“I’m interested in all the 3D stuff. If it could be filmed for 3DTV that would be fun, especially with Doctor Who, but it’s very expensive. I don’t know how they’d do it.”
And he’s hit the nail on the head there, really. It isn’t a likely prospect, particularly given that the next series is apparently going to be split across two years, 2012 and 2013, due to budget cuts.
So rustling up the wonga for a 3D bells-and-whistles special in the current economic climate is probably about as likely as Christine Hamilton becoming the Doc’s next assistant (we shouldn’t even joke about it, should we…).
The 50th anniversary show is set to include a load of previous incarnations of the Doctor, including David Tennant, and possibly Peter Davison, Tom Baker, Sylvester McCoy and others.
But not Christopher Ecclestone sadly, who has gone on record saying that he wouldn’t want to go back to the show. Ever.
Still, even without Ecclestone or 3D, we’re betting it’ll be worth watching.
