The mere mention of the word “warlock” immediately brings back memories of Choose Your Own Adventure books, and dungeons, traps, deadly beasts and treasure hidden deep within Firetop Mountain.

Of course the warlock of Paradox Interactive’s (along with Ino-Co Plus) upcoming turn-based strategy game on the PC has nothing to do with our treasure hoarding friend from the early eighties.

In fact the game is set in Ardania, the land of the Majesty RTS (and recently tower defence) franchise.

Players step into the shoes of the “great mage”, controlling armies and wielding powerful magic to wage war against other wizards, also trying to build up their territories and conquer the world.

Yes, it’s a Civ-style magic empire builder which features three races, a wide range of military units, and a whole heap of spells with combinations to be concocted to really bring the fireballs or ice comets raining down on your enemy.

An innovative city management scheme is promised and Gods are also involved, with players trying to strike a balance between magic and military might to win. Hmm, that last phrase seems strangely familiar…

Mattias Lilja, Producer at Paradox Interactive, commented: “The great thing about Warlock is that it inherits the best elements from classic turn-based games and renovates them with a modern look and feel.”

“Partnering with Ino-Co Plus to bring this breath of fresh air to the genre is just icing on the cake, they’ve done well to bring the Majesty world to life in the past and we are confident they’ll deliver again.”

Other than that, details are pretty scarce, save for the release date which is set at the second quarter of next year.
