Zombie splattering fans who aren’t keen on time limits will be glad to hear that the re-imagining of Dead Rising 2 is set to have a sandbox mode.

Dead Rising 2: Off the Record is a reboot of the game starring the hero of the original Dead Rising, photojournalist Frank West (as opposed to Chuck Greene).

The game will add new areas to Fortune City aside from the malls and casinos we know and love, fresh missions, and photo opportunities as Frank can earn prestige points for snapping scenes of maximum carnage and horror.

Of course, new monsters and combo weapons are a given (including wheelchairs equipped with twin machineguns), plus the developer has optimised the game in many respects, reducing lag, loading times and generally tweaking the game engine.

And the latest revelation about the game, made at PAX over in Seattle, is that a new sandbox mode is being added.

This does away with the stringent timer which pressures the player in Dead Rising, and lacking the time sensitive missions (and goals such as getting your daughter Zombrex every 24 hours), you’re free to just kill zombies. Lots of them. And take photos of it all.

Have a peek at the trailer here, which shows the sort of challenges that are scattered about the environment in the sandbox. Including the very tasteful drink as much in thirty seconds as possible, which ends rather predictably.

Dead Rising 2: Off the Record will be out on October 14th, on PC, Xbox and PS3.
