Babylon 5 is a classic piece of nineties sci-fi, not too many folks would argue with that. Some would, but some people would argue about mortar with a brick wall.
Hugely atmospheric and with a defined visual style for its ships (which was much copied, erm, we mean the inspiration for some spacey computer games), Babylon 5 enthralled with its political/diplomatic intrigue and depth of the characters.
And if you’re a fan, you might have got quite excited last week when Walter Koenig (who played Alfred Bester) announced that J Michael Straczynski, the creator and showrunner of the original, might be all set to resurrect the series as a contemporary TV show.
Straczynski was supposedly in talks with Warner Bros to recreate another series or possibly a feature film, Koenig had said.
However, the man himself has come forward to say that this isn’t true, and apparently Koenig got things wrong.
Straczynski announced on Twitter: “Walter misspoke: I am not in negotiations with WB to develop more Babylon 5.”
A fellow Tweeter then asked if Koenig had misinterpreted a comment he’d made, and if so, about what, but Straczynski didn’t elaborate any further on the issue.
It seems that even with all the high profile rebooting which has been going on lately, Babylon 5 won’t be getting that treatment. We’ll just dust off the boxed set later this year, we think, and prepare for some classic G’kar and Londo moments…
