Gamescom happened over in Cologne at the close of last week, and as is traditional with every games show, awards have to be given to the most promising upcoming titles which were shown off.
So what was voted best of Gamescom 2011 by the resident jury of gaming experts? Battlefield 3, that’s what, the sharp looking shooter from EA which is set to go head-to-head with Modern Warfare 3 this autumn.
While the behemoth Call of Duty franchise is a guaranteed massive seller and not likely to lose the sales battle given its established fan base, we could see a considerable degree of erosion if BF3 turns out to be as good as it’s promising.
EA also scooped the best console game with another title which is shaping up to be excellent, according to all the previews: FIFA 12.
The best upcoming game for the PC was voted as Diablo III, and another RPG took the online games category, Star Wars: The Old Republic.
The latter is from EA, too, and the publisher will doubtless be pretty happy given that it also took home the best browser game accolade with The Sims Social.
Best mobile game went to Sony’s Uncharted: Golden Abyss, and the company also picked up the best hardware award for the PlayStation Vita.
The latter’s success could well be dependent on the price point, though, given just how much Nintendo has chopped down its asking price for the 3DS (you can now get one for just over £100).
