Kalypso has revealed an upcoming space strategy title of the 4X mould.

And a 4X space game doesn’t mean the shuttle pilots chug Australian lager while warp-driving down the space lanes. 4X actually refers to empire building games where you eXplore, eXpand, eXploit and eXterminate. A bit like an adult version of the Daleks.

Legends of Pegasus gives the player control of the remnants of the human race, exploring a galaxy far, far away and attempting to expand their empire in those distant reaches.

Economic and diplomatic elements will need to be mastered in order to push your empire forward, and scientific achievements racked up to unlock new technologies to customise your space fleet.

Alien races you encounter have to be dealt with, or could become stalwart allies and trading partners.

If they turn out to be Vogons and you just can’t stand another verse of “Oh freddled gruntbuggly”, then you can destroy them and also pinch bits of their tech in the process. Research isn’t the only way to make progress.

In terms of gameplay, the tactical space combat will be a mix of turn-based and real-time action, as is the norm with many games these days.

A vast range of customisation options are promised, in terms of ship designing and building, but also with modding options to allow the community to come up with custom maps, missions and the like.

An extensive single player campaign is planned, and the developer Novacore Studios claims multiplayer won’t be neglected either, with a strong focus on player versus player battling.

Legends of Pegasus is set for blast off in Q2 2012.
