Tor Books are to release the first in a new series from Neal Asher, author of the Polity universe novels, entitled The Departure next month

The new book is a ‘departure’ from the Polity universe and follows the story of Alan Saul – the story is predominantly set on Earth and partly on Mars and the fictional Argus station.
Earth is under dictatorship; whilst the top 20% of the population live in luxury, the less useful citizens are given Zero Asset Status and condemned to a life of starvation in the wastelands.
Not many object, if they do they could find themselves being readjusted or sent to the digesters.
The Argus Station looks down on Earth and maintains an oppressive control over the planet’s inhabitants. Citizens are spied on by camera systems and political officers, the world is inhabited by shepherds, reader guns, razor birds and the brutal inspectorate, with its white tiled cells and pain inducers.
Twelve billion people on Earth must die before the Committee has the capability to edit human minds and they intend to make this achievable by turning large sections of the planet into concentration camps. Once the satellite laser network comes fully online the Committee can concentrate on stabilising Earth.
When Alan Saul wakes up in a crate on the conveyor to the Calais incinerator, he doesn’t remember anything but the face of his interrogator and the pain he’s been through. He is informed by Janus and the hardware implanted in his skull how the world is now and he is determined to destroy it. First though, he must find out who he was and track down the interrogator, whom he is determined to kill.
Essex-born author Neal Asher was writing short science fiction for many years before he published his first novel, Gridlinked. He then went on to write eleven more, four of which have been translated into nine different languages.
