Borderlands fans, take note – a sequel to the game is already underway at Gearbox, and is expected to emerge next year.
That’s the word from Eurogamer, who spoke to a source “close to the game”, although publisher 2K Games hasn’t said anything to confirm this after EG contacted the company.
Gearbox boss Randy Pitchford had previously told Eurogamer: “I can tell you that myself and everyone at Gearbox loves Borderlands and we have been absolutely thrilled at the reception it’s gotten from our customers and the fact that it’s sold over four million units now.”
But he refused to be drawn on confirming a sequel. It seems that we won’t have to wait much longer, however, as an official announcement from 2K Games is expected to be coming soon.
If you missed Borderlands, it was a well received co-op shooter with strong RPG elements in terms of tweaking and levelling your character. Throw in vehicle combat and a post-apocalyptic setting, and you had a scintillating brew of looting and shooting action.
Hopefully Borderlands 2 will live up to and indeed improve on the original, as there were certainly flaws in the design. Not everyone was keen on the implementation of vehicles, for example, and some criticised the game for a rather “grindy” (repetitive killing) feel.
Hopefully we’ll discover that it’s a masterpiece of a sequel next year.
