Fans of Terry Brooks Shannara series will be pleased to learn that book two in the Lengends of Shannara duology is due to be released next month by Orbit Books.
The new title, The Measure of the Magic is the sequel to the fantasy epic Bearers of the Black Staff.
Following the catastrophic demon war which left the world in tatters, survivors have hidden in a mountain valley protected by magic. Humans, elves and mutants thought themselves safe, but now a troll army marches toward an invasion.
Sider Ament was the bearer of the last remaining black staff, a powerful talisman passed down through the ages by the Knights of the Word. The staff is the key to maintaining the balance of magic throughout the world, but now Sider is dead and the protective magic preserving the mountain valley has begun to fade.
On his death, Sider gave the staff to Panterra Qu, a young tracker who struggles to control its power – now sacrifices must be made in order to avert a war between the Word and the Void, if darkness invades then everyone will pay the price.
An excerpt from The Measure of the Magic:
“Even now, other eyes were already sizing him up. He could feel them doing so, several pairs in several different places. But those eyes that belonged to the animals – the things that the poisons and chemicals had turned into mutants – were already turning away. Their instincts were sharper, more finely tuned, and they could sense when something wasn’t right. Given the choice, they would almost always back away.”
Terry Brooks is the author of more than 25 novels that have all appeared on the New York Times bestseller list, The Sword of Shannara stayed on the list for five months. Many of Terry’s books are connected in some way but all of them are well written fantasy novels designed to be enjoyed as stand-alone trilogies or as a whole series.
The novels of Shannara are epic fantasy, grand and serious in scope. The Landover novels are light-hearted fantasy. Nearly the exact opposite from the Landover novels is the Word & Void series—a dark, contemporary fantasy.
