There are some (hopefully) fantastic games coming out this autumn, such as Skyrim, Modern Warfare 3 and Battlefield 3… and let’s not forget sneaking in before these in October, a little offering called Rage.
Rage is the latest shooter to be crafted by the genius outfit who first truly popularised the deathmatch with Doom and then Quake, id Software.
And a new trailer has just been released documenting Rage’s story – which has been worked on considerably, unlike their old masterpieces – along with some other juicy snippets of info.
The plot is post-apocalyptic, with Tim Willits (Creative Director at id) explaining that the Earth gets hit by an asteroid in 2036, an event based on a real asteroid called Apophis which will pass very close to our planet in that year (but with only a 1 in 250,000 chance of an impact according to current estimations, you’ll be pleased to hear).
The player is a survivor who emerges from an underground storage unit a hundred years after the disaster – and yes, there’s a very Fallout vibe here, as you’ll see yourself in the trailer.
Expect the usual mutants running rampage around the landscape, bandits with no mercy, and lawful settlements attempting to carry on with life as it was to some extent.
Rage boasts an open-world, open-ended setting with the usual plethora of missions, and an overarching storyline which becomes about more than just the survival you’re initially tasked with.
And of course, it features a load of cool weapons, from big old pistols, modified crossbows and radio-controlled bomb cars, to the usual submachine-guns and shotguns.
Oh, and there are full-size vehicles here too, with Interstate 76 style battles between rocket-launcher toting buggies and pick-ups. Marvellous.
Rage certainly looks cool, admittedly in a very Fallout/Borderlands style, but hey, that’s not exactly a bad thing. The game is expected to arrive in the first week of October, so get ready to buy a new graphics card then… it’ll come in handy for Battlefield 3 anyway.
