Zombies… you can’t live with them, and you can’t die with them either, on account of the fact that when you’re infected you become undead.

And the idea of the latest game from Digital Reality and Candygun Games is to live through the zombie apocalypse.

Dead Block has just been unleashed onto Xbox Live Arcade today, and for 800 MS points you can get yourself some zombie slaughtering action.

You might think zombie games are getting staler than a hundred-year-old corpse by now, but judging from the trailers this looks like a reasonably neatly implemented crack at the old undead hack-and-slash.

Four player co-op is offered up, with eight co-op levels on top of the ten mission single player campaign. The plot is rather different, too, with the shuffling apocalypse being triggered by nothing less than rock ‘n’ roll (the game’s set in the 1950s).

Other than that, the game looks fairly standard fare, with the three survivors (a boy scout, builder and traffic warden) freezing, splatting and bombing their way through the masses of unwashed flesh eaters. While still writing out the occasional parking ticket, we’ll wager.

Players can collect power-ups to help them take out more zombies, and upgrade their arsenal of weaponry with delights such as high-powered nail guns. Guitars can also be used to literally shred the undead to death (there are shades of Dead Rising there, of course).

Dead Rising this won’t be, but it looks like a decent little humorous budget effort. Hopefully those looks will be born out – there’s a demo available on XBLA if you want to test the waters.
