It seems that a Green Lantern sequel will get a green light, despite the fact that the first flick put in a less-than-stellar performance at the US box office.

The film (which has just come out in the UK) features Ryan Reynolds as Hal Jordan, a cocky test pilot who becomes the first human to join the intergalactic police force, the Green Lantern Corps.

Who are more scary than they sound, a super-powered bunch of galaxy cops who maintain justice around the universe, or that’s the theory anyway.

The first movie saw interest dwindle rapidly in its second weekend, and Deadline reports it fell by 66% in terms of revenue, a sharp drop.

Warner Bros said that it was a disappointing performance, but to a point understandable as so-called “fanboy pics” generally get a big opening weekend of hardcore fans going to see them, followed by a plummet in viewers.

And all this has happened even though Warner Bros put a big marketing spend behind the flick.

Despite everything, it would seem Warner has no plans to cancel Green Lantern 2, and according to Deadline’s sources still believes in building the franchise.

That isn’t perhaps quite so surprising given that it would seem time has already been invested in the sequel. In fact, this time last year the script team were already writing a treatment for GL2.

Meanwhile, the bad reviews for Green Lantern continue to pour in, with a Metacritic rating of 39%.
