Contrary to what we had heard previously, there won’t be a full series of Doctor Who in 2012.
This year has seen the run split into two, with the first half just having ended on a big cliffhanger, and the second coming in the autumn.
However, it seems that budget cuts have perhaps sliced deeper into the Doc’s pockets now, and the full series which was commissioned for next year will be split over 2012 and 2013.
The information was revealed by Wayne Clarke, BBC Merseyside’s Religious Editor who tweeted what Danny Cohen, Controller of BBC One, said at a media conference.
Clarke tweeted: “Danny Cohen says there won’t be a full series of Doctor Who in 2012, but a special run for the anniversary in 2013.”
Lizo Mzimba, a Beeb reporter, clarified: “The BBC has, of course, commissioned 14 new episodes of Dr Who (hurrah) so looks like some will go in 2012 and remainder in 2013.”
As to exactly how many episodes will be screened in 2013, he said: “No idea yet how many episodes in total in 2013. But, hey, it’s still two years away.”
Presumably it will be a 7-7 split, although of course the 50th anniversary of Doctor Who is in 2013, so they’ll be leading up to something special there.
Previous rumour has it that the anniversary will involve an episode with past incarnations of the Doctor returning (although Christopher Ecclestone has said he won’t be one of them).
