Matt Reeves (of Cloverfield and Let Me In fame) has been signed up to direct This Dark Endeavour, the movie adaptation of Kenneth Opel’s novel subtitled The Apprenticeship of Victor Frankenstein, which is a prequel to the gothic classic Frankenstein.

The novel and therefore presumably the movie stars a young Victor and his twin Konrad who is seriously unwell and generally near to death. It revolves around the search for an elixir which will cure all ills and conquer that impending demise.

After the craze of vampire and zombie flicks, Frankenstein seems like an obvious step to lumber over to, and indeed Hollywood seems to be plodding inexorably in this direction with a number of Frankie movies potentially in the works.

Guillermo Del Toro is supposed to be helming a Frankenstein film among several others. So what’s next after vampires, zombies, werewolves and the not-so-jolly green giant with bolts through his neck?

Mummies have been done too, of course… Hollywood will be running out of options. Time to invent another monster for modern times, perhaps. Or remake The Birds with vicious psychopathic budgies.
