The sequel to the highly atmospheric and acclaimed Metro 2033 has been announced by THQ.

Danny Bilson, EVP of Core Games at THQ, called the original a “flawed masterpiece” – flawed in that it didn’t get the marketing support it needed. “We won’t make that mistake with Metro: Last Light”, he insisted.

Once again the post-apocalyptic ruins of Moscow and its underground will be the setting for the game, with developer 4A Games promising a more polished experience – with much improved lighting and physics – visceral combat, and added gameplay depth.

The plot involves a desperate civil war over a doomsday device which could destroy not just Moscow but the entire world. A multiplayer component is coming, too.

Other specifics are thin on the ground at the moment, as they are of course being saved for revelation at E3 next week.

If you want to see a very arty (and quite disorienting) teaser trailer, then head on over to the game’s YouTube channel and prepare for some disturbing images flickering rapidly before your eyes.

Bonus points if you can name the music, by the way (answer at the end of the story).

We must admit at first glance it looks pretty similar to the original, but we’re sure the devs have got some surprises up their survival-shooter sleeves. And more Metro can only be a good thing, anyway.

Oh, and that tune? Portishead’s Machine Gun, haunting as ever…
