The latest trailer for Gears of War 3 has hatched out, and you can see it at the official site here (or on YouTube if you prefer).

Microsoft boasts that it offers a peek at the “epic-scale” campaign in which Marcus Fenix and his brothers-in-arms attempt to save humanity from the Locust and Lambent menace.

The trailer is worth watching for two reasons. Obviously the first is that it shows you what the Gears of War 3 campaign will look like – pretty darn tasty, and filled with skittering little creatures and huge tentacled giant-mawed monsters aplenty.

And the second reason is the fact that it’s set to Black Sabbath’s War Pigs, with some very nice cinematic work to time the rhythm of the music with the beasties bursting out onto the screen. Good work that director.

Pre-E3 trailer or no trailer, Gears of War 3 is of course hotly anticipated. Those of you who felt the second game’s multiplayer was a disappointment – seemingly quite a few – will be pleased to hear beta-tester reports that the new Gears is shaping up really nicely for online play.

The date to get geared up for war on is September 20th, when the game is out on the Xbox. MS says it has already passed one million pre-orders globally, making it the fastest pre-selling Xbox exclusive title ever, with months to go yet.

The Standard Edition will be £49.99, and for the Limited Edition you’ll pay £59.99, or the real fans can push to the Epic Edition at £99.99, which comes with a free pen, beer mat and Gears of War car freshener*.

*Actually it comes with a Marcus Fenix statue, exclusive multiplayer character, Octus service medal, a flag, personal effects of Marcus Fenix including his will – he’s not real, you know – and a bonus reality check.
