The shortlist for the 2010 Arthur C. Clarke Award has been announced, chosen from science fiction novels that saw their first publication in Britain in the 2010 calendar year.
The list includes Zoo City (Angry Robot), by Lauren Beukes; The Dervish House (Gollancz), by Ian McDonald; Monsters of Men (Walker), by Patrick Ness; Generosity (Atlantic), by Richard Powers; Declare (Corvus), by Tim Powers; and Lightborn (Orbit), by Tricia Sullivan.
The Arthur C. Clarke Award, which was established by a grant from Sir Arthur C. Clarke to promote science fiction in Britain, has been awarded since 1987 and is currently administered by the Serendip Foundation. The first winner of the award was Margaret Atwood’s The Handmaid’s Tale, and last year’s winner was The City & The City, by China Mieville.
The judges for this year’s award include Paul Billinger, who Chairs the judges committee, Jon Courtenay Grimwood and Martin Lewis representing the British Science Fiction Association, Phil Nanson and Liz Williams, who represent the Science Fiction Foundation, and Paul Skevington for SF Crowsnest.com.
The winner of this year’s award will be announced on 27 April 2011 in London, at the SCI-FI-LONDON Film Festival. The winner will receive a commemorative engraved bookend and a prize of £2011.
