Dark Scribe Magazine, an online magazine catering to readers of horror, suspense and thrillers, has announced its fourth annual Black Quill Awards, recognizing work in the genres it highlights, with an Editor’s Choice and a Readers’ Choice in each category.
In the category of Dark Genre Novel of the year, which is awarded to the author if a horror or suspense novel or thriller published by a mainstream publisher, the Editor’s Choice was A Dark Matter (Doubleday), by Peter Straub, while the Reader’s Choice was Sparrow Rock (Leisure Books), by Nate Kenyon.
Both the Editor’s Choice and the Readers’ Choice for the Best Small Press Chill, a novel or novella published by a small press, with the award going to the author, was A Book of Tongues (ChiZine Publications), by Gemma Files.
The Editor’s Choice for Best Dark Genre Fiction Collection, awarded to a collection by a single author that was published by either a mainstream or small press, was Occultation (Night Shade Books), by Laird Barron, while the Readers’ Choice in this category was Blood and Gristle (Bad Moon Books), by Michael Louis Calvillo.
In the category of Best Genre Anthology, awarded to the editor of a multi-author collection, the Editor’s Choice was Haunted Legends (Tor Books), edited by Ellen Datlow and Nick Mamatas, while the Readers’ Choice was Horror Library IV (Cutting Block Press), edited by R. J. Cavender and Boyd E. Harris.
The Editor’s Choice as Best Genre Book of Non-Fiction, which goes to the author or editor of a work of non-fiction relating to any of the genres covered by the awards and published by any publisher, was The Conspiracy Against the Human Race (Hippocampus Press), by Thomas Ligotti, with the Readers’ Choice going to Thrillers: 100 Must Reads (Oceanview Publishing), edited by David Morrell and Hank Wagner.
The Best Dark Scribble, which goes to the author of a single, non-anthology short piece of fiction, the Editor’s Choice was “The Things” (from Clarkesworld Magazine, January 2010), by Peter Watts, while the Readers’ Choice was “We” (from Cemetery Dance #64), by Bentley Little.
Both the Editor’s Choice and the Readers’ Choice for Best Dark Genre Book Trailer, awarded to a video promotion for any genre work of fiction or non-fiction went to the trailer for Neverland (Pocket Books), by Douglas Clegg, with the award going to Circle of Seven Productions, producer of the trailer.
