Eastercon, one of the biggest science fiction and fantasy conventions in the UK, will be held at the Hilton Birmingham Metropole Hotel in Birmingham, runs 22 through 25 April 2011. Named Illustrous 2011, Eastercon has announced its guests of honor, as well as a new take on the traditional Masquerade and a couple of competitions for fans to participate in. It has also announced that the two main themes of the convention will be military science fiction and science fiction through the ages.
The Author Guests of Honor this year will be David Weber and Peter F. Hamilton. Weber, an American author best known for his Honor Harrington series. He writes military science fiction, alternate history, space opera and epic fantasy, and has co-written series with several other writers. Many of Weber’s works are available online. In his time away from writing, Weber is a Methodist lay minister.
Peter F. Hamilton, who writes primarily in the “new space opera” genre, is most widely known for his novel The Reality Dysfunction, the first volume in the Night’s Dawn trilogy, which also includes The Neutronium Alchemist and The Naked God.
Eastercon’s Artist Guest of Honor in 2011 is David A. Hardy. Hardy has been an astronomical illustrator since he was commissioned at age 18 to provide illustrations Patrick Moore’s Suns, Myths, and Men. He does cover art and illustrations for both non-fiction and fiction books and magazines, and has been nominated for two Hugo Awards. Hardy has an asteroid named after him.
This year’s Poet Guest of Honor is Roz Kaveney, while the Fan Guest of Honor is Vince Docherty.
Instead of holding a traditional Masquerade this year, there will be an Admiralty Ball, which will double as a dance and costume competition. There are also two other competitions scheduled to be part of Eastercon this year. The first is a short film competition, for fan-made films less than 10 minutes long and relating to either one of the themes of the convention, or to poetry in science fiction. The other contest is a creative writing competition that includes four categories: a short story of exactly 2011 words; a drabble, which is defined as 100 words; a sonnet; or a haiku. The Artist Guest of Honor has provided a painting which is displayed on Eastercon’s official website which can be used as a prompt for the writing competition entries.
The deadline for submissions for both contests is 1 April 2011. More information about the competitions, and about the convention generally, is available on Eastercon’s website.
