Codemasters has announced that its massively multiplayer role-playing game, Lord of the Rings Online, is now free to play.

The game was first unveiled back in 2007, and has seen two expansion packs released since then by developer Turbine.

You can now download it and taste the Middle Earth atmosphere for free, without even having to put down a credit card during sign up.

Players will earn free points as they complete quests and advance their hero, and these can be used to buy further goodies in the LotRO store to get hold of items, potions, premium content and expansions.

Of course, you can also purchase points with real world money, and Codemasters is hoping that you’ll get drawn into the adventuring enough to open your wallet and succumb.

Fancy a bit of hairy-hot-footing-it around the shire for no expenditure whatsoever? Then download the client here and get rolling your character.
