The 2010 World Fantasy Awards were presented as part of the World Fantasy Convention on Sunday, 31 October in Columbus, Ohio. The awards were for works published in 2009.
Winner in the Novel category was The City & The City (Macmillan UK/Del Rey), by China Miéville. The book has already won the 2010 Arthur C. Clarke Award for best science fiction novel published in the UK last year, while it tied for the 2010 Hugo Award as best Novel with Paolo Bacigalupi’s The Windup Girl (Night Shade), and was nominated for a Nebula Award in the Best Novel category.
Best Novella was “Sea-Hearts” (X6) by Margo Lanagan, while “The Pelican Bar” (Eclipse Three), by Karen Joy Fowler was named Best Short Story.
American Fantastic Tales: Terror and the Uncanny: From Poe to the Pulps/From the 1940s to Now (Library of America), edited by Peter Straub, won the award as Best Anthology. There was a tie for Best Collection, with the award shared by There Once Lived a Woman Who Tried to Kill Her Neighbor’s Baby (Penguin), by Ludmilla Petrushevskaya, and The Very Best of Gene Wolfe/The Best of Gene Wolfe (PS/Tor), by Gene Wolfe.
Charles Vess was named Best Artist.
A Special Award – Professional was awarded to Jonathan Strahan for editing anthologies, while a Special Award – Non-Professional went to Susan Marie Groppi for Strange Horizons.
