J. K. Rowling , author of the Harry Potter books, has added another honor to her collection.

Ms. Rowling was announced as the recipient of the first Hans Christian Andersen Literature Prize. The prize is meant for writers whose works are deemed comparable to that of the Danish writer of fairy tales such as “The Little Mermaid” and “Thumbelina”.

The prize, including a plaque and 500,000 kroner (£60,000; $93,500) were presented to Ms. Rowling on 19 October in Odense, Denmark, birthplace of Andersen.

The prize is separate from the Hans Christian Andersen medal, sometimes called the “Nobel Prize for children’s literature), which has been awarded since 1956 to recognize lasting contributions to children’s literature and is given separately to writers and illustrators.
