Comic-Con has signed an agreement to remain in San Diego after the city promised to expand its convention facilities to accommodate the convention, which has grown from its modest beginnings in 1970, with 300 comics fans in attendance, to become the largest convention of its kind with an annual attendance of 125,000. Comic-Con has sold out every year since 2007 and needed more room to accommodate fans who want to attend.
With the convention outgrowing its home at the San Diego Convention Center, both Los Angeles and Anaheim made bids to host the comics convention that now presents programming related to films, books, television, gaming and other media in addition to its original comics programming. Now, instead of moving on after its current contract expires in 2012, Comic-Con will remain in San Diego through at least 2015.
The next Comic-Con, the 41st annual convention, will be held 21 through 24 July, 2011.
