The finalists for the World Fantasy Awards have been announced.
Nominees for Novel include Blood of Ambrose (Pyr), by James Enge; The Red Tree (Roc), by Caitlin R. Kiernan); The City & The City (Macmillan UK/Del Rey), by China Miéville; Finch (Underland), by Jeff VanderMeer; and In Great Waters (Jonathan Cape UK/Del Rey), by Kit Whitfield.
The City & The City has already won the 2010 Arthur C. Clarke Award and is nominated for a 2010 Hugo Award, while The Red Tree was also nominated for the 2010 Shirley Jackson Award as Best Novel and for the 2010 Locus Award for Best Fantasy Novel.
The shortlist in the Novella category include The Women of Nell Gwynne’s (Subterranean), by Kage Baker; “I Needs Must Part, the Policeman Said” (F&SF 12/09), by Richard Bowes; “The Lion’s Den” (Nemonymous Nine: Cern Zoo), by Steve Duffy; The Night Cache (PS), by Andy Duncan; “Sea-Hearts” (X6), by Margo Lanagan; and “Everland” (Everland and Other Stories), by Paul Witcover.
The Women of Nell Gwynne’s has already won the Locus Award for Best Novella, while “I Needs Must Part, the Policeman Said”, was nominated for a Nebula Award.
Short Story nominees are “The Pelican Bar” (Eclipse Three), by Karen Joy Fowler; “A Journal of Certain Events of Scientific Interest from the First Survey Voyage of the Southern Waters by HMS Ocelot, As Observed by Professor Thaddeus Boswell, DPhil, MSc, or, A Lullaby” (Strange Horizons), by Helen Keeble; “Singing on a Star” (Firebirds Soaring), by Ellen Klages; “The Persistence of memory, or This Space for Sale” (Postscripts 20/21: Edison’s Frankenstein), by Paul Park; “In Hiding” (Putting the Pieces in Place), by R. B. Russell; and “Light on the Water” (Fantasy 10/09), by Genevieve Valentine.

Special Awards – Non-Professional nominees include John Berlyne for Powers: Secret Histories; Neil Clarke, Cheryl Morgan and Sean Wallace for Clarkesworld; Susan Marie Groppi for Strange Horizons; John Klima for Electric Velocipede; Bob Colby, B. Diane Martin, David Shaw, and Eric M. Van for Readercon; and Ray Russell & Rosalie Parker for Tartarus Press.
Nominees in the Artist category include John Jude Palencar, John Picacio, Charles Vess, Jason Zerrillo, and Sam Weber.
The winners of this year’s World Fantasy Awards, which recognize works from 2009, will be announced at an awards banquet at the world Fantasy Convention on Sunday 31 October 2010, in Columbus, Ohio.
