When the news that Blizzard, maker of the MMORPG juggernaut World of Warcraft, was producing another massively multiplayer game, there was plenty of speculation about what it would be.
And one of the ideas floating around was that of an MMOG based on the StarCraft universe, as that’s certainly a franchise with plenty of followers. Witness the 1.5 million units of StarCraft II which were shifted in the first 48 hours of the game going on sale.
At any rate, that particular rumour has now been quashed, as Now Gamer reports that Activision CEO Bobby Kotick let slip that the upcoming title would be a completely fresh franchise.
As to exactly what sort of MMOG it would be, we’re still not any closer to knowing; but it won’t be StarCraft.
It’s not so much the setting or genre we’re worried about, however. We’re just hoping that Blizzard can pull something truly innovative out of the fire to jazz up the massively multiplayer world.
Although if StarCraft II is anything to go by, it will be a matter of sticking to tried and tested formulas, but polishing them until they glow. Not that there’s anything wrong with that approach – it worked brilliantly for the sci-fi RTS – but we’d just love to see a revolution in the MMORPG world.
We long for something which would have us playing with wonder again, like those first days of EverQuest, bumbling about Faydark forest in awe of its mysteries.
