There have been three incarnations of The Sims which have sold well over 100 million copies globally, making the video game franchise the fourth most successful ever.
So where’s the series headed next? Back in time, that’s where, with EA announcing The Sims Medieval. Think Bill & Ted’s Excellent Adventure, but with less royal ugly dudes.
The idea is to immerse the series in the world of role-playing, essentially, setting it in the Middle Ages with heroes who venture out on quests. The player will slowly build up his or her kingdom via peaceful internal expansion, or perhaps going to war with their neighbours.
And that expanding kingdom will be populated by the usual wizards and knights, Kings and Queens, blacksmiths and bards, and, well, that’s all EA mentions actually. But we’d also bet on court jesters, peasants called Baldrick, and enigmatic inn-keepers with rumours aplenty.
Depending on which hero sim the player is controlling, quests will unfold differently. Missions will range from crafting a legendary sword to finding the fountain of youth (which we seem to remember was in The Sims games anyway).
Expect a host of medieval themes and trappings, from fighting duels to going in the stocks. It’s an interesting development for the series in so much as it sounds like the game’s going to offer a lot more in the way of concrete goals than previously.
Scott Evans, General Manager of The Sims Studio at EA, commented: “The Sims Medieval offers a new way for players to experience The Sims which we hope fans will enjoy, and it features gameplay that fans of strategy and role-playing games will find appealing such as controlling an entire kingdom and quest based gameplay mechanics.”
The Sims Medieval will be out on both PC and Mac formats, with the release date currently pencilled in as spring 2011.
