Cryptic Studios has announced that the new content update for its ship and ground combat MMOG Star Trek Online is now available.

No charge will be made for Season Two: Ancient Enemies, which introduces a number of new races, battles and all new episodes amongst other features.

There are eight new episodes designed for the Klingons and starring the Fek’ihri, the infamous enemy of the founder of the Klingon Empire, Kahless. Needless to say, the return of the Fek’ihri is not good news (it’ll give players everywhere pronunciation problems, for starters).

Alongside these Klingon affairs will be new feature episodes, five of which will be introduced over a number of weeks starting in August. These will revolve around a neutral race, the Deferi, who might be very fond of cheese and triangular shaped chocolate bars (or not).

Finally, the storyline with the Undine is continued with five new episodes, allowing players to venture into their native “fluidic” space to learn more about them, and their battle with the Borg. There’s a considerable whack of new content wrapped up in that lot.

New rewards have been introduced, including fresh Tier 5 ships, along with high level versions of every Special Task Force mission. Speaking of levels, the cap has also been extended from 45 to 51, with a range of new ranks to achieve for both Federation and Klingons.

To top this lot off, a new gameplay avenue has been opened up which allows players to progress via ambassadorial skills. The Federation Diplomatic Corps can be advanced through, earning ranks and rewards, for those who can meet and peacefully get along with new civilizations.

Finally, the space casino game Dabo is being introduced to Star Trek Online, to allow commanding officers to kick back and bet their pay packets on a spin of this futuristic roulette wheel.

It’s a pretty impressive sounding update, and although we haven’t played the game in a while, we’re almost tempted to take a trip back (if we could just find the time to play an MMORPG again, that is).

Further improvements are promised to Star Trek Online over the rest of 2010, in response to player feedback. These include addressing issues with ground combat, introducing more ship options, making rewards more interesting, and of course fixing some of the long-standing bugs that really irk players.
