Publisher Bigpoint has made some more details available regarding its upcoming browser based MMOG, Battlestar Galactica Online.
Launching at Syfy.com this autumn, the free-to-play game will apparently be one of the most ambitious ever developed for a browser, with next-generation graphics promised.
Heiko Hubertz, CEO of Bigpoint, commented: “Bigpoint’s goal is to raise expectations on what can be achieved in a browser based game. Battlestar Galactica Online is the perfect license to help us elevate the consumer’s understanding of this genre of gaming and reach gamers who have never tried a free-to-play game.”
In BGO, players can choose to join either side, beginning as a “nugget” freshly drafted in from the human civilian fleet, or a recently generated Cylon pilot mind. There will be twenty ranks to advance through via experience points, with skills to train up on the way.
Not only does the player develop his or her character, but their ship also has to be taken into consideration. Both factions will have several playable ship classes, divided into sizes from small to large, and roles – offensive, defensive and command.
Ships will be further customisable with a number of slots which can house upgrades in the form of superior weaponry, hull, engine and computer technology. The bigger the ship, the more slots you’ll have to play with.
Those larger ships can be requisitioned by collecting enough resources, although your pilot will also have to gain enough rank to be qualified to command the bigger vessels. Eventually, a high level player will own several ships, picking and choosing a craft based on the current situation or mission.
Missions will come in two forms – story missions and assignments. Story missions introduce players to the game, and reveal their role in the ongoing struggle between the two races. These revolve around key plot points, and are unlocked gradually as you progress up the ranks.
Assignments are bread and butter missions which encompass basic tasks such as killing a certain number of enemy players in combat, harvesting a certain resource, or managing to down five Pan Galactic Gargle Blasters in the space station bar without an ensuing liver transplant.
On an overall level, BGO describes itself as a blend of exploration and tactical space combat, set against a backdrop of the mysteries of the Battlestar universe. It certainly sounds like it will be worth a whirl for fans of the series, particularly given that it’s a freebie.
