EA has revealed its plans to launch a sci-fi action role-player called Darkspore in 2011.

The game is being developed by Maxis, and is apparently inspired by the creature editor technology featured in their previous release Spore.

Darkspore is described as a “unique take on the action RPG genre”, with players battling across alien worlds to save the galaxy from the mutated bad guys. Along with a single player campaign, player versus player battles will be available, and a four player co-op mode for the more peaceful minded.

All these battles will be fought by genetic heroes who can be upgraded with literally tens of thousands of different body parts and armour. So if you want a plasma fist or spiky kneecaps, you can have them. Tactical selections of teams of heroes who complement each other will be an important consideration.

Darkspore has an expected release date of February 2011. You can find out more about the game, and watch a short teaser trailer, at the official website.
