The Shirley Jackson Awards in recognition of outstanding achievement in the literature of horror, psychological suspense and dark fantasy fiction published in 2009 were presented at the Readercon 21 Conference on Imaginative Literature, held 8 – 11 July 2010 in Burlington, Massachusetts.
The award for a novel went to Big Machine (Spiegel & Grau), by Victor La Valle, while the jurors chose Nick Antosca’s Midnight Picnic (Word Riot) in the novella category and “Morality” (Esquire), by Stephen King, won the award for novelette.
The jury chose “The Pelican Bar” (Eclipse 3), by Karen Joy Fowler in the short story category.
There was a tie in the competition for single-author collection between Love Songs for the Shy and Cynical (Big Finish), by Robert Shearman, and Tunneling to the Center of the Earth (Harper Perennial), by Kevin Wilson, while the winner in the edited anthology category was Poe: 19 New Tales Inspired by Edgar Allan Poe (Solaris), edited by Ellen Datlow.
The Shirley Jackson Awards are presented with the permission of Ms. Jackson’s estate. Shirley Jackson wrote “The Lottery” one of the most famous, and most taught, short stories in the English language, as well as such novels as The Haunting of Hill House.
This is the third year the Awards have been presented. Previous winners in the novel category were Generation Loss (2007, Small Beer Press), by Elizabeth Hand, and The Shadow Year (2008, William Morrow), by Jeffrey Ford.
