It seems that Edward Norton won’t be reprising the role of Bruce Banner when the Hulk returns to cinema screens in The Avengers movie, due out 2012.
Another actor will step into the not-so-jolly green giant’s tattered but nonetheless marvellously resilient pants.
Hitflix snagged the exclusive on this one, reporting that Marvel Studios issued a statement which wasn’t particularly kind to Norton.
President of Production Kevin Feige said: “We have made the decision to not bring Ed Norton back to portray the title role of Bruce Banner in the Avengers. Our decision is definitely not one based on monetary factors, but instead rooted in the need for an actor who embodies the creativity and collaborative spirit of our other talented cast members.”
A new actor will be decided in the “coming weeks”, apparently. Norton can’t be too happy with the suggestion the statement makes, which seems to be that he wasn’t a team player. With perhaps a slight dig at his acting talent, too?
Either way, for a public statement it doesn’t make very pleasant reading. Hitflix also reported Norton’s agent’s response, which claimed that the move did seem like a financial decision to him, and that there was “no excuse for Feige’s mean spirited, accusatory comments”.
Which we would agree with, it hardly seems professional. Norton himself has responded on his Facebook page, the Guardian reports, in a very level-headed and positive manner.
He said: “I know this is disappointing to many people and that makes me sad. But I am so grateful to Marvel for extending the offer and even more so for the chance to be part of the Hulk’s long and excellent history.”
