The winners of the John W. Campbell Memorial Award for the best science fiction novel published in 2009 and the Theodore Sturgeon Memorial Award for the best short fiction of 2009 have been announced ahead of the ceremony where those awards will be given during the Campbell Conference and Awards Ceremony, to be held this coming weekend in Lawrence, Kansas.
The winner of the John W. Campbell Memorial Award is The Windup Girl (Night Shade), by Paolo Bacigalupi. Backgalupi’s first novel has already won a Nebula Award, a Locus Award and the Compton Crook Award, and is in the running for a Hugo Award as Best Novel.
The novella Shambling Towards Hiroshima (Tachyon Publications), by James Morrow, is the winner of the Theodore Sturgeon Memorial Award for short fiction. It is also a finalist for a Hugo Award, in the Best Novella category, and was a finalist for Nebula and Locus Awards, both also in the Best Novella category.
The runners-up for the Campbell Award are, in second place, Julian Comstock: A Story of 22nd-Century America (Tor), by Robert Charles Wilson and, in third place, The City & The City by China Miéville. In a three-way tie for second place for the Sturgeon Award are “As Women Fight” (Asimov’s, Oct/Nov 2009), by Sara Genge, “Things Undone” (Baen’s Universe, December 2009), by John Barnes; and “This Wind Blowing, and This Tide” (Asimov’s, Apr/May 2009), by Damien Broderick.
