APB (All Points Bulletin) is EA’s new online game, which is basically a massively multiplayer cops and robbers sandbox.
APB is freshly launched, and as part of the marketing activity surrounding the game, EA has announced something called the “Human Avatar” experiment. The company is calling it a real-time experiment in identity and transformation.
Basically, the player base has voted and chosen one player from the real world – a 25-year-old freerunner called Josh – who will be transformed into an APB celebrity, getting a makeover from the game’s community. For real.
At the moment, Josh’s hairstyle is being voted on, and currently the predictably sadistic denizens of the net have voted for the weirdest looking hairdo – the cyberpunk style (basically a triple mohawk sort of thing, see the pic above). 44% of folks plumped for this.
EA explained in a press release: “The hair style with the most votes will be applied to Josh by leading London hair designer, Darren Evans, who’s previous work includes being Kristin Scott-Thomas’ hair stylist on ‘The Walker’ and make-up department head on ‘Streetdance 3D’.”
The really tough bit for Josh, however, is still yet to come in the following couple of weeks, when people vote for his tattoo and piercing (we assume one of the options won’t be the unthinkable).
Once Josh’s makeover is complete, artists at developer Realtime Worlds will recreate him in-game, and see how long he lasts. The average player is killed once every six and a half minutes – as for a virtual celebrity with a bullseye effectively painted on their forehead, well, the odds aren’t good.
Follow the progress of the Human Avatar, complete with short video clips depicting his transformation, at the specially designed website.
