The 36th Annual Saturn Awards were presented on 24 June in Los Angeles by the Academy of Science Fiction Fantasy & Horror Films.
James Cameron’s film Avatar was named Best Science Fiction Film. Avatar also garnered four acting awards as well as nods for Best Director and Best Writer for Cameron, Best Music for James Horner, Best Production Design for Rick Carter and Robert Stromberg, as well as for Best Special Effects. James Cameron was also awarded The Visionary Award for his merging of art and technology in Avatar.
Best Fantasy Film was Watchmen, while Drag Me to Hell was named Best Horror Film, Monsters Vs. Aliens won as Best Animation, District 9 was named Best International Film and Quentin Tarantino’s Inglorious Basterds won as Best Action/Adventure/Thriller.
On the television side, Lost was named Best Network TV Series, while Breaking Bad won as Best Syndicated/Cable TV Series and Torchwood: Children of Earth was named Best Presentation on Television.
Among past winners of the Academy’s Best Science Fiction Film award are Soylent Green (1973), Star Wars (1977), Alien (1979), Back to the Future (1985), Jurassic Park (1993), Stargate (1994), and Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind (2009).
Previous winners of the Best Fantasy Film award include Oh, God! (1977), Raiders of the Lost Ark (1987), The Princess Bride (1987), Being John Malkovich (1999), and the three Lord of the Rings films: The Fellowship of the Ring (2001), The Two Towers (2002), and The Return of the King (2003).
Winners of the Best Horror Film Award have included The Exorcist (1973), The Dead Zone (1983), Fright Night (1985), From Dusk ‘Til Dawn (1995), 28 Days (2003), and Shaun of the Dead (2004).
The Academy of Science Fiction, Fantasy and Horror Films was founded in 1972.
