Finalists for the 2010 John W. Campbell Memorial Award have been announced.
Novels nominated for the award include The Year of the Flood (Talese) by Margaret Atwood; The Windup Girl (Night Shade), by Paolo Bacigalupi; Transition (Orbit), by Iain M. Banks; Makers (Tor), by Cory Doctorow; Steal Across the Sky (Tor), by Nancy Kress; Gardens of the Sun (Pyr), by Paul McAuley; The City & The City (Del Rey), by China Miéville; Yellow Blue Tibia (Gollancz), by Adam Roberts; Galileo’s Dream (Ballantine Spectra) by Kim Stanley Robinson; WWW: Wake (Ace; Gollancz), by Bruce Sterling; and Julian Comstock: A Story of 22nd-Century America (Tor), by Robert Charles Wilson.
The Windup Girl, The City & The City, and Julian Comstock: A Story of 22nd-Century America are all also nominated for the Hugo Award for Best Novel.
The John W. Campbell Memorial Award honors the legendary editor of Astounding Science Fiction, now known as Analog, who edited the magazine from 1937 until his death in 1971, and who is considered by many to be the father of modern science fiction. The award, which was first presented in 1973, was established by Harry Harrison and Brian W. Aldiss to continue Campbell’s tradition of encouraging writers.
The winner of the award is selected by a jury after publishers and jurors make nominations from novels published in English during the previous calendar year. This year’s award will be presented during the Campbell Conference Awards Banquet as part of the Campbell Conference, to be held the weekend of 16 – 18 July 2010 at the University of Kansas at Lawrence, Kansas.
