Finalists for the Chesley Awards, which honor art and artists related to science fiction and fantasy, have been announced by the Association of Science Fiction & Fantasy Artists.
Awards are given for the best cover illustrations on hardback and paperback books and on magazines; for best interior illustrations; for best color and monochrome work, both published and unpublished; for best three-dimensional art; best illustration related to gaming; and for best product illustration.
This year’s nominees for Best Cover Illustration – Hardback Book include Bob Eggleton, for Dragon’s Ring (by Dave Freer; published by Baen); Todd Lockwood, for A Magic of Nightfall (by S. L. Farrell; published by DAW); John Picacio, for Drood (by Dan Simmons; published by Subterranean); Omar Rayyan, for Magic Mirrors (by John Bellairs; published by NESFA); Rohn Ruppel, for Visions of Never (by Patrick & Jeannie Wilshire, eds.; published by Vanguard); Dan Dos Santos, for Green (by Jay Lake; published by Tor); Matt Steward, for The Valley of Shadows (by Brian Cullen; published by Tor); and Sam Weber, for Prospero Lost (by L. Jagi Lamplighter; published by Tor).
Best Cover Illustration – Paperback Book nominations include Scott Altmann, for The Mysterious Mr. Spines: Flight (by Jason Lethcoe; published by Grosset & Dunlap); Volkan Baya, for Blutnacht Die Orc (from The Lord of the Rings; published by Heyne); Jon Foster, for Boneshaker (by Cherie Priest; published by Tor); David Palumbo, for Stalking the Dragon (by Mike Resnick; published by Pyr); John Picacio, for World’s End (by Mark Chadbourn; published by Pyr); Dan Dos Santos, for Hunting Ground (by Patricia Briggs; published by Ace); and Dave Seeley, for Young Flandry (by Poul Anderson; published by Baen).
Nominees for Best Cover Illustration – Magazine are Les Edwards, for Cemetery Dance (10/09); Bob Eggleton, for Analog Science Fiction and Fact (10/09); David A Hardy, for The Magazine of Fantasy & Science Fiction (10 – 11/09) Kazuhiko Nakamura, for Clarkesworld (#38); David Palumbo, for Heavy Metal (11/09); John Picacio, for Asimov’s Science Fiction (9/09); and Adam Tredowski, for Internzone (2/09).
The Chesley Awards were established in 1985 and first called the ASFA Awards, but were renamed after astronomical artist Chesley Bonestell after his death in 1986. Bonestell’s art included astronomy illustrations for popular science books as well as for science fiction and fantasy publications, and he also did illustration and special effects work for Hollywood productions as diverse as Citizen Kane and George Pal’s 1950s science fiction films.
The Awards are usually presented at Worldcon, but in years when Worldcon is held outside North America, they are presented at the North American Science Fiction Convention. Winners of this year’s awards will be announced at ReConStruction, the 10th Occasional North American Science Fiction Convention, to be held 5 – 8 August in Raleigh, North Carolina.
