Cryptic has just released Season One: Update Two, a major patch for Star Trek Online.

The patch for its MMORPG, which was released at the beginning of the year, adds a substantial number of new features.

A new system of accolades tracks your progress and achievements in, for example, eliminating a certain amount of one enemy species. Naturally, these come with rewards as well as kudos.

Destroying over 500 Klingon Birds of Prey earns you a golden Cornish Pasty trophy – the Klingon equivalent of a scalp. (Oh all right, it doesn’t, you probably get something sensible like upgraded photon torpedoes).

The squad support feature allows new low level players to team up with more experienced friends, and generally makes the STO universe a more sociable one.

Other tweaks to improve the social side of the game include the introduction of a Fleet event calendar, and Fleet mail system.

A whole slew of minor changes have also been implemented, such as fixes to the interface, and tweaks to the game balance.

Finally, Klingon characters automatically and literally explode in rage, showering blood and guts across the screen, when anyone types in a joke about Cornish Pasties. Not really, but maybe Cryptic will consider this move for April Fool’s Day 2011.

Those of you who didn’t renew your subscription after the first free month of play might be interested to learn that Cryptic made a number of other big changes in Season One: Update One, which was implemented at the end of April.

These included the introduction of difficulty levels, so more experienced players who were put off by the bias towards casual gamers can now crank the trickiness of combat right up (receiving greater rewards as a result).
