Publisher Square Enix has announced that Obsidian Entertainment will be putting together action RPG Dungeon Siege 3.
Obsidian, previously responsible for the likes of Neverwinter Nights 2, will be helped along with input from the original developer Gas Powered Games.
The third outing for the franchise will be the first time it has graced the consoles, previously being a Windows only game.
A story with some depth is promised, although it seems to revolve around the usual objective of preventing the land falling victim to the darkness.
Not the pop-rock band – although that truly would be an unimaginable evil – but more likely the usual nefarious beasties, gibbering necromancers, shuffling skeletons, and possibly some manner of animated plant.
Despite the straightforward sounding basis for the tale, apparently the decisions the player makes have an effect on their alliances and enemies, and ultimately the outcome of the adventure.
The game will also feature a brand new multiplayer co-op mode, and a range of highly customisable characters with which to click-and-hack your way through the various levels.
“It’s a distinct privilege and thrill to become a part of the Dungeon Siege legacy,” said Feargus Urquhart, CEO and Co-Founder of Obsidian Entertainment.
“This partnership with Square Enix is a milestone for both Obsidian and the franchise, and the two companies’ strengths for compelling characters and storytelling will shine throughout Dungeon Siege 3.”
We must admit we didn’t get a chance to play Dungeon Siege 2 much, although we enjoyed the original game in a switch-your-brain-off kind of manner.
Hopefully some added depth to the story, and decisions which actually impact the plot-line might pep the series up considerably.
Dungeon Siege 3 will be out on PC, Xbox 360 and PS3 formats, although the exact release date is still up in the air. You can rest assured it won’t be any time soon, though.
