Director of The Hobbit, Guillermo Del Toro, has just announced that he’s leaving the picture, so will no longer be Director of The Hobbit. He will be very much Ex-Director

The two part Peter Jackson extravaganza will have to find a replacement for the man who captained the likes of Pan’s Labyrinth and Hellboy.
According to TheOneRing.net, Del Toro states the reason he’s departing the film(s) is simply because of the string of delays the project has experienced.
Del Toro told TheOneRing.net: “After nearly two years of living, breathing and designing a world as rich as Tolkien’s Middle Earth, I must, with great regret, take leave from helming these wonderful pictures.”
“I wish the production nothing but the very best of luck and I will be first in line to see the finished product. I remain an ally to it and its makers, present and future, and fully support a smooth transition to a new Director.”
It’s a definite shame, and a loss to the project, which it has also emerged hasn’t actually been officially green-lit yet.
ComingSoon.net reports that the film still doesn’t have a start date or the official thumbs up, due to MGM’s fiscal difficulties.
It’s all slightly worrying news for Tolkien film fans, although we can’t imagine these films won’t be made.
We can, however, imagine them sliding further than their current projected release dates, which are far enough away as it is. The first Hobbit film is due at the end of 2012.
