To say the final double episode of Lost provoked a reaction would be an understatement.
Critics and viewers alike seemed to either love or hate it. The end was either a rich and poignant exploration of the characters we’d come to know and love, a final goodbye, cleverly reminding us that this was what Lost was really all about – a spiritual experience of connectedness, sort of thing.
Or it was soppy, over-emotional rubbish which didn’t answer all those questions about the island that we needed to know the answers to.
We fell a bit in-between camps, but mostly accepted the ending as the former, and a highly enjoyable watch, even if it didn’t really deliver on all the details.
Anyway, it turns out that Lost might not be quite finished, according to the actor who played evil-git-turned-good-turned-evil-turned-we’re-not-quite-sure Benjamin Linus.
Michael Emerson was interviewed on Attack of the Show, where he revealed that there would be an epilogue included in the bonus features of the DVD box set.
The twelve to fourteen minute bonus scene explores the relationship between Hurley and Linus, after Hugo takes the helm of the island, with Ben as his second in command. In the series finale, it skipped straight from that moment, to the church scene where they had all died.
When asked if this could lead to a spin-off series, Emerson said it was a self-contained episode, but then added: “It’s a rich period in the show’s mythology that has never been explored, so who knows what will come of it.”
So there you have it. Whether the extra almost-fifteen-minutes of wrapping up on the island will deal with any more of the questions the more outraged fans wanted answered, we shall have to see.
But we doubt it. One thing it does guarantee, of course, is that more people will buy the box set on launch day.
