Fed up of Warcraft, and its massively multiplayer world filled with dusty old dungeons, and cantankerous old raid bosses? Ready for a change of pace?
Perhaps a switch to sci-fi and the return of StarCraft will be the cure to pep up your enthusiasm for Blizzard.
You won’t have long to wait, as the company has announced that Starcraft II: Wings of Liberty will be released on July 27th.
It seems like a long time ago since the first StarCraft was released, mainly because it was – twelve years, in fact.
Wings of Liberty will pick the story up from where StarCraft: Brood War left off, and what’s really smart is the campaign will feature choices in the missions you undertake, with branching paths rather than a pure linear structure.
The protoss, terrans and zerg will of course be back, except rendered in a new 3D graphics engine.
Naturally, online play will be paramount, as StarCraft has long been a bastion of competitive computer gaming.
A new version of Battle.net has been designed with a number of enhancements, from leagues and ladders, to statistics tracking, voice communication, even cloud file storage.
Challenge mode mini-games will be included in the package, designed to introduce the basics of multiplayer strategies to novices.
Oh, and there’ll be a new map editor, too. It sounds like the development time spent on this long-awaited sequel hasn’t been wasted.
Fingers crossed this turns out to be the case.
