Blood Bowl fans should be looking forward to the end of the year, when the Legendary edition of this famous blood-sport will be released.

If you’re not familiar with the game, it’s basically a much more violent version of American Football, played with full-on Warhammer style combat.

The aim is still to get the ball into the endzone for a touchdown, or your opponent’s head (or several of them) failing that.

Developer Cyanide Studio has just announced one of the new races that will be taking part in the Legendary Edition’s seasons – the halflings.

The short, hairy-footed, pint-sized humanoids are a fairly weak bunch, and they’re too slow to outrun the opposition, and too small to develop a passing based attack, apparently.

Which makes them sound pretty rubbish, to be quite honest. Apparently they rely on luck and culinary talent to win a game. And also their allies, the tree-men, giant branch waving loonies who look like they can kick some butt (though their bark may be worse than their bite).

Eleven new races will be added to the existing nine in the new version of Blood Bowl, including undead, ogres and Amazons, each with their own unique stadiums.

The Legendary Edition also plans to update the campaign, introducing a new story mode, in which the player takes the role of a freelance manager.

They’ll have to lead several famous teams through a story that reveals the origins of the game of Blood Bowl. A new and much improved tutorial is promised for beginners, too.

And of course the rules will be updated to reflect the latest edition of the official Blood Bowl rulebook.

Blood Bowl: Legendary Edition will be out on the PC in the fourth quarter of 2010.

There are currently no plans for a console version, although the Xbox 360 variant of the original game took a year to come out, so you never know down the line.
