Phenomic, developer of the SpellForce series of games and now an Electronic Arts studio, has launched Lord of Ultima.

Based on the famous RPG universe of Ultima, which dates back almost thirty years now to the original Ultima I adventure, the latest outing is an online strategy game.

It’s a browser based game, and a free one at that; all you have to do is hop on over to the website (www.lordofultima.com), with no installation or registration required to get going.

Lord of Ultima focuses on social gameplay, so expect to do a lot of dealing with other players in the form of trading, alliances and so forth.

Online chat and community forums are available to facilitate better communication between players.

The ultimate aim of the game is, unsurprisingly, to become Lord of the land. This is achieved by expanding your village into a mighty city, using tools such as trade and diplomacy, as well as spying and conquest, to advance your power.

“Lord of Ultima was designed to ensure that everyone, from strategy newcomers to diehard fans, can make it to the top of the leader board,” said Volker Wertich, Creative Director at Phenomic.

“Phenomic is committed to building dynamic communities that delight players as they interact with the game, each other and the legendary world of Ultima.”

We still remember the first Ultima game we played, Ultima IV on the PC back in the late eighties. The one where you had to develop the eight virtues.

If we remember correctly, we managed about three of them, one of which was to stop picking our nose.
