Independence Day was a surprising hit for the studios back in 1996, but things where so much different back even Will Smith was not the super star that we know of today, so when a sequel is being talked is Will Smith an essential ingredient to make the film a success.
The camps are divided on that matter and for the amount that he charges these days, could a sequel even be a viable. These are things that studio and producer have to consider, could a sequel work without Smith.
For many people the first film was not that great anyhow, so a sequel even with the great Will Smith may not go down too good.
The studio feel that it is the director that is holding things up, but that would not necessarily seem to be the case; one thing is Independence Day 2 is going to take a lot longer than anticipated.
