The much awaited film District 9 has got over the hurdle with weekend box office takings in the US topping $36.9 million, when compared to the over films in the genre such as GI Joe: The Rise of the Cobra and The Time Travellers Wife, these figures are very good.
Yet according to the film’s director Neill Blomkamp, this film is not science fiction at all, despite the fact the story is based around an alien ship that lands and the occupants just want to live amongst us.
However, the ship has landed in South Africa, which just happens to be where Neill Blomkamp comes from.
Back to the film, the aliens are rounded up and placed into District 9 and this is where science fiction crosses over with fact. Forgetting that these are aliens, the treatment that they receive can be seen throughout history in ghettos and camps.
