The University of Iowa Libraries in Iowa City, Iowa, in the United States, has recently added the approximately 3,000 science fiction fanzines to its collections.
A fanzine is a magazine written by and for fans in a particular fandom.
These publications originated in the 1930s within science fiction fandom, but have since branched out to other fandoms, such as music, television and films.
Most of the fanzines in the Marielle (Ming) Wathne Fanzine Archive Collection at the university focus on major science fiction fandoms, such as “Star Trek” and “Star Wars”.
According to Greg Prickman, the assistant head of special collections at the University of Iowa, there is a great deal of scholarly interest in these fan-generated publications.
