DeviantArt - Anyone Commissioned Artwork from here before?

Hi, so I have this new idea rattling around my head and it refuses to go away (even after getting a few thousands words out the creative juices refuse to stop flowing - ick).

I'm so obsessed with it at the moment that I'm looking for artwork to emulate the characters.

So anyway, after much googling I seem to end up back at DeviantArt and I don't know anything about the website.

Has anyone commissions artwork via DeviantArt before. Is it safe? (as in financial transactions/privacy etc).

Yes, I have. Quite a lot. Yes, reasonably safe. I've only been screwed over once. I paid someone, they did half the job, then disappeared. Luckily, I don't pay much.

Have a look at my covers here: ejtett - Home All done by people on DA.

You go to the forums and start a thread in the (I think it's called) job offers section. Lots of people reply. All you have to do is look through galleries, check prices, check to see what commissions they've done for other people and that's that. Most of them are perfectly happy with you paying half up front and then the rest once you've got the final pic. Tis easy.

If you like, I can find out who I've commissioned and point you towards their profiles.

It's been hit/miss for me. The really great ones don't take commissions anymore because they're over-loaded with work. And half the time nobody responds to your request. But I have gotten some decent stuff. It just takes some leg work (from my experience). And this was a few years ago. Maybe things have changed.

I've found a promising one but there's a waiting list.

Some fantastic images on there though - great place to go for potential book covers.

Yeah, I would imagine! Not sure what artists charge for book covers. Have never ordered anything like that, but I did order a few character portraits for my own inspiration.

It's the character portraits I'm interested in. I've taken some pics from google, but it would be nice to pin the genuine article down. Not sure I can wait until Jan though.

Most I've paid on DA is $100, from a well respected artist too. Never had a bad experience paying for art personally. I'd probably charge something similar.

Also look for artists who do MMORPG character portraits (like World of Warcraft) and whatnot. There are a LOT out there who do amazing work.

May i also suggest I stock Photo. Their images are of a very reasonable rate and there is lots of good stuff there.
