As i work on planning out this novel i have been obsessed about doing for a long time yet haven't been able to get any done due to mood issues and an "uncomfortable mind" (its the best way i can describe it), i am wondering what genre it would belong to.

My projection of the story (in its current and hopefully final form) is that it is set in the future and starts off as a fish out of water story of sorts. Involves the main character going to a city for the first time and silliness ensures. Later he gets involved in crime in order to save a family member's life (from an illness) and is rewarded with cybernetic implants, but the recovery for installing them takes 6 months.

The after coming out of stasis for the recovery he awakens to find the world have been invaded by biomechanical invaders (H.R. Giger type ones, they come in many different forms) and is thrusted into a post apocalyptic adventure of sorts with a story of revenge and saving the world from the being behind the whole invasion.

This is the plot, at least in a dumbed down form without revealing too much. I also mentioned the aliens are Giger inspired (they are not like the xenomorphs though) since i don't want to have aliens that look like the awfully dull aliens from crap like Skyline. I want creatures that are creepy and threatening. I want the plot to be fun yet serious in areas in order to keep what i think is the perfect balance to a story. I can never like a story that's just one or the other, has to be a balance of various emotions. Its the kind of story i have always dreamed of experiencing, but never really got due to how bad recent media is and many novels being rather unknown with this kind of plot i just mentioned (if there are any that are similar, please let me know, it would help).

So, if you could narrow it down, what kind of genre do you think this story belongs to?

Sounds like science fiction to me. :)

I guess its kinda a silly question in the first place.

It originally had fantasy elements, but i decided to take most of them out in this version since i thought it made the story too convoluted.

At its most basic, its science fiction. If you (or e.g. an agent) want something more, you can call it post apocalyptic. Have you started writing it yet?

Im afraid not, i have the urge to but i feel the need to finish planning it out and writing it in a different location than the one i am currently in...i feel uncomfortable writing where i am. Too depressing and boring.

From what i see it as, its a Cyberpunk, science-fiction, post apocalyptic alien invasion novel.

The fantasy stuff i mentioned is still in the novel somewhat due to the main villain...the alien behind the whole invasion, being a creature from fantasy.

Pity -- it sounds interesting. It might be worth even writing a single scene, just to get a feel for it.

Im telling you, it tears me up everyday that i haven't written into it yet. I did try writing an unfinished chapter at some point of an earlier incarnation of it. But it fell flat since it was from a first person perspective and most people i showed it to on this other forum said it didn't follow the "show, don't tell" rule. Came across as a written report rather than a story. So i instead decided to focus on writing in a traditional narrative since its easier to do. I lost interest in that version and pretty much scrapped it.

To spoil a bit more of the plot, the plot has always been this. There is always a man, there is always an invasion...and there is always a dragon.
